Untitled (Mood Room, Lot #7)
This installation was part of a body of work created for the exhibition, Interior Dialogue, presented by Long Gallery Harlem and curated by Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Jampol. The “Blackity “pattern was employed for the wall coverings and upholstery. The antique chairs, settee, and curio cabinet were acquired at auction, re-upholstered and hand-painted by the artist. The double-sided pillow depicts images of two of the artworks that also hung in the gallery. The cabinet holds 15 scented candles in up-cycled vessels. Each custom-created scent represents a different mood and evokes a range of feeling a person might experience. By means of the scents they emit and/or the recognition of a decidedly Black nomenclature that names them, the candles are part of an ongoing exploration of alternative models for space-making and community building. In this case, the installation is enhanced, perceived and perhaps even understood through the visitor’s sense of smell.
